History
Early childhood
issues, especially the areas of education, health, justice and the
arts, were a lifelong interest for the founder of Halcyon Hill
Foundation.
In 1992, she
decided to help the youngest members of her community by
establishing a family foundation to enhance opportunities for
pre-school age children in Rochester, NY. In 15 years of grantmaking Halcyon Hill Foundation has awarded over
five million
dollars to improve the lives of local preschool age children. (See
2005 - 2006 Financial Highlights.)
The Foundation was
named for the halcyon, a fabled bird who brought calm to troubled
seas. Similar to a kingfisher, the bird was believed to calm the
winter wind and waves in order to nest on peaceful waters. Sailors
rejoiced at the presence of a halcyon for it signaled a period of
peace and tranquility.
The values that
drive the philanthropic mission of Halcyon Hill are many. Energy,
curiosity, and participation define the commitment of the
foundation; loyalty, respect, and sensitivity, its integrity; a
strong belief in collaboration, innovation and leadership speak to
its sense of community responsibility; and finally, the wish for
good humor, quietude, and graciousness characterize all aspects of
its decision making.
With these values
in mind, the founder's children are continuing the philanthropy that
their mother began, working toward peace, tranquility, and enriched
opportunities for Rochester's children.
